Charities The Cambridge Cambourne 10k is run entirely by volunteers on a non profit basis. Unlike many events, once our costs are covered by race entry fees and the generous support of our sponsors, we give everything to a our charities. There are no administration expenses.
The main share goes to the year's main charity. You can read about our charities below. When you register, your confirmation e-mail will contain some information about how you can raise extra money for our charities, but remember that we have no expectation of you to do that, and, like most of our runners, you'll be doing your bit just by entering and conquering the course! If you would like to raise money for your own charity rather than our official ones, you are very welcome to do so.
About Our Main Charity
Our main charity for 2012 is Red Balloon Learner Centres. Here's how they describe themselves.
Mission
The aim of Red Balloons is the recovery of bullied children.
We provide an 'intensive care' full-time education for children aged between 9 and 18 who are unable to go to school because they have been severely bullied. At least half of the students we take have attempted or seriously considered suicide.
We promise the students whom we accept a safe environment with clear boundaries for behaviour, and an individual full-time academic, pastoral and therapeutic programme.
Once the students have regained their confidence and are able to cope academically and socially, we support them in their return to mainstream school, their entry to further education or to employment.
The Wildlife Trustsfor Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire
Whether you’re running the 10K or going along as a spectator, you'll be on Wildlife Trust land at some point on race day.
The Wildlife Trust is based in Cambourne and much of the course is on land managed by the Trust.
The Trust works to improve the habitats of local wildlife and help to protect rare species such as otter, dormouse and barn owl.
Managing 129 nature reserves across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, the charity offers reserves which are free to visit and enjoyable for all the family. 95% of the population live within five miles of one of their reserves.
